To create a winning team, simply having talented athletes, continual practice, and a capable coaching staff is not enough.

A positive team culture is also equally important. As per Stacy Danley, team culture tends to establish norms of acceptable behavior on a team, thereby either explicitly or implicitly conveying to members what is allowed and what is not. If a team maintains a positive culture, its members will feel comfortable communicating with each other and their coaches. This leads to improved teamwork and coordination on the field.

Developing a positive culture within a sports team is vital to winning every season or championship. Hence, coaches must be proactive about building a positive team culture where each player feels valued and supported.

Here are a few characteristics of a positive team culture:

  • It starts with a shared purpose: Having a shared purpose helps develop a collective sense of belonging within a team. In many ways, it serves as the glue that keeps the team cohesive and makes sure that everyone is working toward the same thing. To make sure that the team has a shared purpose, each of its players must be aware of its core values. As the team members are clear on what they value above all else, there would be less chances of conflicts and decision-making would also become easier.

  • Foundation of trust and openness: A team would be in a position to address any problem faced by it where there is enough trust among its members, and everyone is clear on what they value above all else. This trust provides a safety net, enabling the defences to come down. This trust is built over time through mutual care and respect.

  • Empower athletes to solve problems together: By practising “consensus decision making”, sports teams can address their issues in an effective manner and strengthen weaknesses. This is a creative process where everyone affected by the decision works together to find an appropriate solution. The team would take into account all the angles and avenues of the matter rather than voting on a set of choices. Such a consensus decision-making process advocates for better creative deliberation till a decision is reached that does not go against anyone’s will, thereby cultivating respect and trust. Teams that empower players to solve problems together will naturally empower each and every athlete to speak up. This reinforces a feeling of interdependence as well as a sense of belonging.

  • Focus on accountability: If there is accountability in a team, then trust will dissipate. Established expectations and roles encourage team members to own their mistakes and follow through on commitments. If every player on the team has the willingness to learn and correct mistakes, the team would effectively move forward as a unit.  

On the whole, as per Stacy Danley, a positive team culture is vital for athletes to succeed in sports. It provides them with the support, respect, and encouragement they require to perform at their best.
